Ferdowsi’s Tomb in Mashhad

Ferdowsi’s Tomb is one of the historical, spectacular and beautiful monuments in Mashhad, belonging to the great poet Hakim Abolghasem Ferdowsi.
History:
Hakim Abolghasem Ferdowsi, a famous Iranian poet and epic poet, is buried in a garden in Toos, 20 kilometers from Mashhad.
The tomb of Abolghasem Ferdowsi was located in his personal garden until 1310 AH and had no building.
However, it was put into operation in the city of Toos in 1313 AH, simultaneously with the rituals of Ferdowsi’s millennium.
He is the greatest poet and Persian speaker who succeeded in composing the Shahnameh.
By composing the Shahnameh, he was able to breathe new life into our culture.
We all owe the immortality of the Persian language to him because at that time the language of knowledge and literature in Iran was Arabic.
In this literary masterpiece, the wise man has managed to portray the myths, legends and history of Iran.
This great poet was born in 329 (A.H.) in Toos, Khorasan, and passed away in 416 (A.H.).
< I suffered a lot in this thirty year / I revived the Persian language >
< I realized the order of the tall palace / That the wind and rain cannot destroy >
< The buildings of the city are ruined / From the rain and from the sun’s rays >

Architecture:
The architects of this historical monument are Houshang Seyhoun, Hossein Lorzadeh, and Mohammad Qasim Baghernejad.
The style of this architecture is Iranian architecture and is also inspired by the architects of the Achaemenid era, especially the tomb of Cyrus.
Poems by Hakim Toos Abolghasem Ferdowsi himself are written on the four sides of the building.
The interior of this building is also inspired by the architecture of the Parthian period.
This interior space includes 20 marble columns at the bottom and 8 columns at the top of the building.
This building uses concrete, stone, and tiles and has a base of 900 meters.
The ceiling inside is made of mosaic tiles and its walls are made of stones from the Toos region.
In general, it is similar to the tomb of Cyrus in Pasargadae and the buildings of Persepolis.
The garden itself now covers an area of about six hectares and also has a museum and library that has approximately 1 million visitors annually.
The Toos Museum consists of four sections.
Artifacts such as martial and epic equipment such as shields, maces, and bows and arrows dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries AH are placed there.
Apparently, when this great sage died, he was prevented from being buried in a public cemetery (due to his Shiite background) and was later buried in a garden in a garden that belonged to him inside the city.
In the tomb area, poems by Mahdi Akhavan Sales can be seen.
The statue of Ferdowsi was made in Italy by an Iranian artist, Abolhassan Seddighi, and brought to the tomb.
You can also see statues of the stories of Shahnameh made by Abolhassan Seddighi’s son, Fereydoun Seddighi.
