Tang Mud Volcano, Chabahar
Introduction:
Mud volcanoes are one of the strangest geological phenomena.
In Iran, there are mud volcanoes in the northern and southern parts.
About 800 mud volcanoes have been identified worldwide, 30 of which are located in southern Iran.
15 of them are located between Jask and Minab ports, 9 between Chabahar and Jask ports, and 6 between Chabahar and the Iran-Pakistan border and in the north of the Gulf of Gwatar.
The southern mud volcanoes were formed in the coastal plain of the Sea of Oman due to the pressure of the movement of the oceanic plate of the Sea of Oman.
The northern mud volcanoes are located in Golestan Province and in Aq Qala County.
The most famous mud volcano in Iran is the Tang region mud volcano, which is still active.
Residents of some old villages in Sistan and Baluchestan province have chosen the name “Bolo Bolo” for their mud volcanoes.
The name was probably chosen based on the sound of mud coming out of the ground.
Some people in Chabahar also call mud volcanoes, especially the Tang mud volcano, “Napeg.”
Napeg means navel in the local language, and people consider mud volcanoes to be the navel of the earth.
The best season to travel to this region is considered to be the rainy season, i.e. the cold seasons of the year until early May.
Tang Chabahar Mud Volcano
What is a mud volcano?
Tectonic pressures have caused the formation of mud volcanoes.
In this rare phenomenon, mud and mud like a spring boils from the earth and pours out of volcanic craters.
The emerging mud gradually cools and accumulates around it, creating a cone shape.
This cone is large or small depending on the age of the mud volcano.
Mud volcanoes may become inactive depending on atmospheric conditions.
The composition of some mud volcanoes partially reflects the internal state of the earth in terms of the presence of water, oil, and other hydrocarbon derivatives.
Some believe that the mud emerging from mud volcanoes has therapeutic properties.
They are also used in the pottery and brick industries.
The scientific name of this phenomenon is “MUD VOLVANA”.

Characteristics of Tang Chabahar Mud Volcano:
Tang Chabahar Mud Volcano is one of the oldest mud volcanoes in Iran, as a researcher named Harrison wrote about this mud volcano in 1941.
The Tang or Pang mud volcano consists of 3 small volcanic hills resembling volcanic peaks, only one of which is active and the others have not been active for several years.
The Tang mud volcano is an example of a conical mud volcano that is about 72 meters above the ground.
At the top of this cone, there are small craters from which gray or green mud comes out and pours down its slope approximately every ten minutes.
It takes about 5 minutes for the mud to rise from the crater and boil from there.
Sometimes when the mud jumps, you will hear a sound like a gunshot and the ground may shake slightly under your feet.
The content of these mud volcanoes is peat, petroleum mud, sulfur, etc., which contain organic compounds and have many healing properties.
