Why is this area called the Genie Cemetery?
According to the local people of the area, this cemetery was related to the genies for the following reasons.
They believe that the genies mourn over the graves of their dead at night and that if anyone passes through this area at night, they will be cursed by the genies and will die within a few days.
The reason for the name of the Genie Cemetery is the existence of graves in the heart of the rock, which, considering the primitive tools available in the past, seems impossible to exist in the heart of the rock.
Another reason is the size of the graves, which are much larger than ordinary graves.

Possibilities regarding the emergence of the Genie Cemetery:
However, these reasons only indicate an old belief, while today archeology has confirmed the burial of the dead in the rock that was done in the past.
This was one of the customs of the Zoroastrian religion.
Zoroastrians considered the four elements of water, wind, earth, and fire to be pure.
For this reason, the bodies of the dead were first placed in a place where they would not be prey to scavengers and other animals and their contamination would not reach the soil.
Then, the remaining bones were buried in a place called an ostudan.
An ostudan was a stone hole in the heart of a mountain. This method was used during the Sassanid period.
You can see an example of this method in the Tower of Silence in Yazd.
There is another possibility about this cemetery that the diggers of these graves may have buried their dead in the heart of the stone out of respect for them and to protect their bodies from creatures and animals.
A group of cultural heritage experts also believe that these stones were not graves at all, but ponds for collecting and storing rainwater.
Other information:
The Jinn Cemetery was registered in the National Monuments of Iran in 2007.
The present-day cemetery of Tis village is located next to this cemetery.
Relics of such a cemetery can also be seen on the slopes of the Shahbaz Mountains in Markazi Province.
