Kariz Underground City, Kish

The underground city of Kariz is one of the historical areas of Kish, which is 2500 years old. This aqueduct, with an area of 10 thousand square meters, was created at a depth of 16 meters and in order to provide fresh water. Kariz is the only underground city in the world whose roof is full of natural shells and corals. This beautiful place, which is a combination of ancient Iranian architectural art and the nature of the island, attracts every tourist during their trip to Kish.

History of the city:
The water of this aqueduct originates from both sides of the island, namely the Baghu and Safin regions.
Water from the island’s seasonal rainfall was also directed to Kariz.
The corals in the water path and the walls of the aqueduct were like a natural filter, purifying the water.
Some natives of this area exchanged the refreshing water of the aqueduct for other products.
The water of the aqueduct led to the ancient city of Harireh on a path. There were 274 wells along the route for water collection.
For many years, this aqueduct was not used and was not considered a tourist attraction.
Finally, in 1378, this aqueduct was renovated and renovated with private investment by Engineer Mansour Haji Hosseini and was prepared for public viewing.
Features:
The coral roof of this kariz is 7 meters in diameter and full of fossils, aquatic animals, and shells that have become fossils.
Experiments were conducted at the University of Munich, Germany, on these fossils.
The results showed that they are between 53 and 570 million years old.
Each of these fossils has its own identity card that is displayed.
In the meantime, the 570 million year old turtle fossil is of great interest to tourists.
A layer of mud is placed on the roof after the layer of shells and corals.
This layer, called “Gol Marn”, has many healing properties, especially for joints and skin.
It has also been used in the past to make bricks, jars, and cement.
Another of the most important features of the Kariz underground city is its cool air.
So that it does not matter what season of the year you go there to visit.
The air in this area is cool all year round.
That is why the water in this aqueduct has a suitable temperature and does not lose its quality for drinking.
