Kish Sea Turtles
Getting to know turtles:
Sea turtles have a very high adaptability.
For this reason, they have been able to maintain their population in the vast oceans for millions of years.
The highest abundance of sea turtles was in the 18th and 19th centuries.
However, over time, overhunting, unprincipled fishing, habitat destruction, and pollution of the marine environment caused the extinction of many of their species.
Only a limited population of sea turtles were able to survive these disasters.
Five species of sea turtles live in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and Iranian waters.
The coasts of Kish Island have provided unique conditions for the life of these animals due to their suitable temperature, suitable water salinity, rich food sources, and suitable beaches for nesting and spawning.
Therefore, a large number of sea turtles take refuge on the coasts of this island every year.
Species on the island:
Two species of sea turtles, the Green and Hawksbill turtles, live on the island.
Green turtles usually come to the waters of Kish Island to feed.
They are also more present in areas with more algae.
But hawksbill turtles only come to the protected sandy beaches of the island to lay their eggs.
This species is critically endangered and lays eggs from late March to mid-August.
On average, eggs are laid three times per season, with 15-day intervals.
The baby turtles hatch between 60 and 70 days after hatching and head to the sea.
They reach maturity at 30 years of age and return to their birthplace to lay eggs.
The lifespan of these turtles is about 40 years.
The role of these turtles in the marine ecosystem, especially corals, is of particular importance.
For this reason, various organizations are making great efforts to protect and preserve them.
