Shiraz Bahman Dam

Bahman Dam, located on the Qara Aghaj River between Shiraz and Firuzabad, dates back to the Achaemenid period.

Introduction:
Bahman Dam is located 7 kilometers west of the city of Kavar and 58 kilometers from Shiraz.
This dam is attributed to Bahman, son of Esfandiar.
The reason for its creation was to raise the water level and divert the water flow through a channel towards the Kavar plain.
This channel is located in the eastern corner of the dam and in the rocky body of the mountain.
The water released from this channel enters the Kavar plain and is used by about 20 villages.
The length of this dam is 130 meters and the height of its highest point is 9 meters.
The materials used in the construction of this building are mortar and pieces of natural mountain stone.
The reason for the strength of the building over two thousand years is believed to be the fact that part of it is located on the mountain body and part on the rocky bed of the river.
In this way, the river flood after hitting the dam’s nose enters the back reservoir and loses a significant part of its speed and destructive force along this path.
The Bahman Dam’s relaxation pond (a place that is built behind all dams for overflow of water to prevent the destruction of the foundations) is man-made.
This relaxation pond is about 8 meters deep.
This 2500-year-old dam has been restored many times.
In the early years after the revolution, the top of the dam’s crown was covered with rebar and cement.
However, due to water erosion, the cement has worn away and disappeared, and the rebars have become visible.
In addition, the oxidation of the rebars in the water path was not taken into account.
This dam was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran in 1973.
