Historical House of the Guard of Mashhad

Darogha House is one of the historical, spectacular and beautiful houses from the Qajar period, which belongs to the last Darogha of Mashhad.
Darogha Historical House
History:
The Darogha Historical House was built during the Qajar period by order of the last Darogha of Mashhad and the first head of the Nazmiyeh after the Constitutional Revolution, Yousef Khan Herati.
In the past, two other houses near this house were connected to each other from the inside, but are now separate.
The Darogha used this house mostly for holding official ceremonies and receptions.
But after that, until three decades ago, the Darogha’s heirs lived in it.
Finally, in 1987, this building was sold to one of the representatives of the religious delegation of Meybod, Yazd.
From those years until recently, this historical monument was used as a place for religious delegations to gather and stay.
This house was registered as a national monument on October 27, 2002.
In 2016, it also won the UNESCO International Award for the Restoration of Historical Monuments in the Asia-Pacific Region.
Architecture:
Unlike the houses that were built at that time, Russian art was used in the architecture of the Darogheh House.
That is, this house is a combination of traditional Iranian and Russian styles.
For example, we can mention the use of Russian elements in the facade facing the courtyard and many other things.
The wooden decorations under the ceilings, the use of plaster and carved statues such as lion heads, human heads, winged angels, etc. are among them.
The design of the stairs on both sides of the courtyard to the second floor and the sashes used in its construction are also signs of oriental architecture used in the building.
One of the attractive and interesting features of this house is the three-sided construction style.
This feature is present on three sides of the courtyard, namely the northern side, the southern side, and the eastern side of the building (two sides from the living room and one side from the servant’s room).
In those years, private bathrooms were not common.
The general public used to do their cleaning work in public baths.
But this house also contains the city’s first private bath.
In addition, the first fireplace in Mashhad is located in this house.
For this reason, the Darogha House was more advanced than the houses and mansions of that time.
