Tughral Tower

Toghral Tower is one of the valuable works of the Seljuk period. This tower has special and stunning uses that occupy the mind of every viewer. In ancient times, they used the concourses in this tower to determine the time.
History:
- This tower is located on Ibn Babawayh Street in the city of Rey and to the east of Ibn Babawayh’s tomb.
- Toghral Tower is a monument from the Seljuk period.
- Its date goes back 900 years. Its architect is Mohammad Amin Memar Bashi.
- In some texts, this tower is called the Khalifa Tower of Yazd.
Architecture:
- The height of Toghral Tower, excluding its conical dome, which has disappeared and no trace of it remains, reaches about 20 meters.
- Its area is approximately 48 square meters.
- Its skeleton is made of brick, brick, and mortar, which is made in a cylindrical shape.
- Its interior is cylindrical.
- The reason for the building’s strength against earthquakes and other natural disasters is the mortar.
- The mortar is a mixture of egg white, rock powder, camel wool and goat hair, lime, and coal ash.
- This tower resembles a clock face.
- The time can be determined by the sunlight on the concourses that surround the building.
- The number of these concourses is 24.
- The concourses are not unrelated to the 24 hours of the day.
- These concourses are specially designed.
- At sunrise, the concourses are lit one by one from the east. So that in half an hour, half of the concourse is lit, and in one hour, the entire concourse is lit.
- At noon, when the sun is on the meridian of the region. At this time, the sun is above the southern door of the tower. In winter, when the sun is lower, the sun shines from the southern door right in the middle of the tower.
- After that, the west-facing corridors start to light up until sunset.
- In the past, travelers on the Silk Road could find their way by lighting a fire on its high rampart.
- Sound is also reflected inside the tower. So that everyone can hear the echo of the sound.
Restoration:
- The Tughral Tower was restored by order of Nasir al-Din Shah in 1301 AH.
- This work was carried out by Abul Hasan Khan Memar Bashi, but some of its delicate work and the Kufian inscription tomb were destroyed in this restoration.
- After that, it was restored again in 1377 and was completed in 1379.
- You also added this tower to the list of national monuments to the cultural heritage register in 1310.
What personality is buried in the Tughral Tower?
- There are many differences of opinion about what personality is buried in it.
- Some consider it the tomb of Tughral Beg Seljuk.
- Some consider it the burial place of Khalil Sultan, one of the children of Timur Lang and his wife Shad-ol-Molk.
- Some also consider it the burial place of Faqr-al-Dawla Daylami.
- Mohammad Mohit Tabatabaei, who was himself buried in the same place after his death in 1992, considers this building to be the burial place of Ebrahim Khavas.
